What are the environmental challenges?

At a time when the authorities are coming down hard on those wasting energy and are struggling to deal with the congestion of our road networks, river transport and combined inland waterway and seagoing systems appear to offer an effective solution.

For example, did you know that a barge can accommodate between 30 and 50 lorries ?
