Port of Liège feels the economic pinch in 2009. Liege Port Authority, Belgian's number one inland port and Europe's third most important inland port, reports that the overall level of traffic (water-rail-road) reached 18,192,741 tonnes in 2009 (-3,614,480 tonnes, or down 17% on 2008 , the year when the Port of Liège broke all the records). Liege Port Authority has therefore inevitably been hit by the global economic crisis and a crisis within a crisis: ArcelorMittal's temporary closure of the hot phase.
The outlook for 2010 and the coming years is nonetheless promising, including various projects and welcome developments, such as the creation of the Liège Trilogiport multimodal platform.
